The guns incorporate Lancaster's patent hand-detachable locks and are finished to a typically high standard and remain in exceptionally fine condition for their age.

The gun was built by David Dryhurst and Richard Tandy using the finest outworkers working in the Birmingham Trade at the time. The gun was proofed in 1986 and was likely finished circa 1988/9. Alan Brown has subsequently become one of the most renowned English gun engravers and his speciality is highly detailed game scenes of the type featured on this gun. The self-opening action used is the Henry Atkin variant of the classic Purdey Beesley design.

The gun formed part of the legendary Tulchan Collection. The gun was extensively reworked and refinished by John Wilkes in line with the majority of the guns that formed the collection. The gun is built on the Baker self-opening Twelve-Twenty action.

The maker confirms that the gun was completed circa 2002 and it appears little used. It was engraved by Martin Smith with the carving completed by Keith Thomas. The gun is illustrated in Vic Venter's recent book, "Best of British".

Martin Smith was born in 1971 and served his apprenticeship at Purdey. As a freelance engraver he has gone on to engrave guns for many makers, including Boss, Holland & Holland, David MacKay Brown and Watson Bros.
