A .275 TAKE-DOWN BOLT-ACTION SPORTING RIFLE, NO. 1314

25-inch barrel with ramp fore sight and raised rear sight with one folding leaf, the receiver ring dated 1899 and mounted with its telescopic sight in period mounts numbered to the rifle, the telescope engraved "Altamont", bolt with flag safety, the half length stock with pistol grip and ribbed steel butt plate, impressed on the right side with a crowned letter 'A' and the word 'Sligo', 14 1/4-inch pull, sling eyes, 8lb. 8oz., nitro proof, in its maker's full length canvas case with scope tube, etc, the lid impressed "Sligo"

The maker confirms that the rifle was built 17th August 1900 for Browne, Esq., Mauser sporting best .276, "made in to a take-down".

George Ulick Browne, 6th Marquess of Sligo (1856-1935)

The Earl of Altamont succeeded to the Marquessate in 1913 and also inherited the title 4th Earl of Clanricarde in 1916. The rifle passed to the Knatchbull family through the marriage of the Marquis' youngest daughter, Doreen Browne, to Michael Knatchbull, 5th Baron Brabourne. Lord Brabourne served as Governor of Bombay, Bengal and acted as Viceroy of India in 1938. His son John Knatchbull, 7th Baron Brabourne (known as John Brabourne) married the Hon Patricia Mountbatten in 1946, daughter of Lord Louis Mountbatten and the rifle was passed down through the family. John Knatchbull had a successful career as a television and Oscar nominated film producer and survived th 1979 IRA bomb that killed his father-in-law, Lord Louis Mountbatten, as well as his mother and young son.
