No.1 gun with 30-inch sleeved barrels by the maker, with 2 1/2-inch chambers, about 1/4 choke borings, No.2 gun with 30-inch chopper-lump barrels with 2 1/2-inch chambers, about improved cylinder and 1/4 choke borings, the frames, locks and gold numbered top levers with fine bouquet and scroll engraving and retaining some original hardening colour, the maker's name signed within a scrolling banner, patent single triggers, No.1 with selective single trigger, gold lined cocking indicators, rolled edge trigger guards, 14 1/2-inch well figured stocks with spliced-in replacement combs, No.1 gun including 1-inch extension, No.2 gun including 1/2-inch extension, 6lb. 10oz., nitro re-proof, in their maker's brassbound oak and leather case

The maker confirms that the No.1 gun was built in 1907 and that the No.2 gun was built to match in 1913 with a note that the trigger should be "non-selective". The first gun is ordered in the name Percy E Bates Bt and F A Bates, the second gun ordered by F A Bates.

Sir Percy E Bates Bt (1879-1946) was an English ship owner. Apprenticed to the family firm, he joined Cunard in 1910, became deputy chairman in 1922 and was chairman from 1930 until his death. Frederick Alan Bates (1884-1957) was his younger brother.
