The first gun is ordered in the name Percy E Bates Bt and F A Bates, the second gun ordered by F A Bates.
Sir Percy E Bates Bt (1879-1946) was an English ship owner. Apprenticed to the family firm, he joined Cunard in 1910, became deputy chairman in 1922 and was chairman from 1930 until his death. Frederick Alan Bates (1884-1957) was his younger brother. |
