Details of Lot 189
J. PURDEY & SONS
A PAIR OF 12-BORE SELF-OPENING SIDELOCK EJECTOR GUNS, NOS. 13202/3

29-inch chopper lump barrels with 2 1/2-inch chambers, about improved cylinder borings, the frames, locks and top levers with fine bouquet and scroll engraving and retaining traces of original hardening colour, the fences finely carved with Classical scrollwork and hidden faces, cocking indicators, 14 3/4-inch highly figured stocks including 3/4-inch extensions, 6lb. 12oz., nitro proof, in their maker's brassbound oak and leather case

The maker confirms that the guns were built in 1889 for Baron Schroder. The fences are carved in the Classical style and this is almost certainly the work of Barre. The maker records noting "detonating chased by Barre" and confirming the barrel length as 29-inches.

Baron Sir John Schroder, 1825-1910

He was the son of the founder of the well known banking firm, as well as a great collector and patron of the Arts.
