A FRENCH 14-BORE PATENT SNAP-ACTION HAMMER GUN, NO. 71
30-inch damascus barrels with 2 1/2-inch chambers, about true cylinder borings, the rib inscribed "Invention Schneider à Paris", Eley Brothers stamp and collection no. 438, the breeches impressed "Leopold Bernard, Canonnier à Paris", the rounded frame with non-rebounding back locks, hammers and push-forward underlever finely engraved with fruiting vine, 14 1/4-inch highly figured stock with engraved steel butt plate, 7lb.

The action was patented in Great Britain by François Eugene Schneider in 1861. This was a major contribution to the evolution of the breech-loading sporting gun and centrefire cartridge and was soon recognised by English gunmaker, George Henry Daw, who marketed his own version of this gun the following year. The Eley Brothers collection mark indicates that the gun was probably supplied to them for cartridge development from new. |
