D. EGG A 12-BORE HAMMER GUN, NO VISIBLE NUMBER, POSSIBLY CONVERTED FROM A MUZZLE LOADING GUN 30 1/2-inch damascus barrels with 2 1/2-inch chambers, about improved cylinder and 1/4 choke borings, the rib signed "D. Egg, Piccadilly, London", the frame, rebounding back locks, hammers and top lever with fine bouquet and scroll engraving, the lock plates signed 'D. Egg', 14 1/2-inch figured stock with ribbed butt plate, the fore-end wood indistinctly numbered 22649, 6lb. 12oz., contemporary Birmingham black powder proof, mahogany case S2 Durs Egg (1745-1831) was a celebrated Swiss-born British gunmaker, however his firm ceased trading in 1822 and while it is possible that this gun incorporates elements of an earlier piece by this maker, it is also equally possible that it is spuriously named. |
