A SCARCE 10-BORE BAR-IN-WOOD HAMMER RIFLE, NO. 12266

26-inch damascus barrels with 2-inch chambers, the broad flat rib with stippled top surface and with folding leaf sight to 300, with octagonal semi-smooth rifling, the frame, locks, bolted hammers and patent top lever with fine scroll engraving, 14-inch figured stock with pistol grip, cheekpiece and ribbed butt plate, 10lb. 5oz., black powder proof

The maker confirms that the rifle was completed in November 1871 for J. Watts Garland and was specified as a 10-bore rifle. It has a short 2-inch 10-bore chamber, however is proofed at the size 12 as this reflects the bore diameter across the lands of the rifling.

The rifle at one point was part of the Holland & Holland collection and was sold from there in 1980.
