JAMES PURDEY & SON A FINE 12-BORE SELF-OPENING SIDELOCK EJECTOR GUN, NO. 22605, A TWO BARREL SET the 26-inch Whitworth steel chopper-lump barrels with 2 5/8-inch chambers, about improved cylinder and full choke borings, mid extension, the additional interchangeable 27-inch barrels by the maker with 2 3/4-inch chambers, about full and full choke borings, the frame, locks and top lever with fine bouquet and scroll engraving and retaining much original hardening colour, fences with side clips and concealed third bite, lined cocking indicators, 14 3/4-inch highly figured stock with leather covered recoil pad, 6lb. 9oz., nitro proof, in its maker's lightweight leather case with tools, instruction booklet, etc, canvas outer cover S2 The maker confirms that the gun was completed in 1923 for Abercrombie & Fitch with 2 5/8-inch chambers for the American market. It was stocked by Deane and the barrels were filed by Charlie Aston, two of Purdey's best men at this time. The gun was owned by Mark Barty-King, the dynamic publisher who nurtured the careers of Frederick Forsyth, Jilly Cooper and Catherine Cookson as well as being responsible for the UK publication of Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time".
The additional barrels were fitted by the maker in 1974 and were filed by Jack Aldous who was Purdey's highest paid barrel maker at this time.
