A RARE 16-BORE PINFIRE HAMMER GUN, NO. 6033, BUILT FOR THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON

28-inch damascus barrels with 2 1/2-inch chambers about true cylinder borings, the rounded frame, forward pointing underlever, back locks and hammers with border and scroll engraving, 13 3/4-inch well figured stock with leather-covered cheek pad, 5lb. 9oz., black powder proof, bores marked

The maker kindly confirms that the gun was completed on 29th December 1860 for the Duke of Wellington as an 18-bore breech-loading gun with 28-inch barrels. The original cost was £57, 15s. Lt Gen Arthur Richard Wellesley, 2nd Duke of Wellington was born in 1807 and succeeded his father in 1852. In 1853 he was made a Privy Councillor and a Knight of the Garter in 1858. Known as "the son of Waterloo", he died in 1884.
