WINCHESTER
A SCARCE .22 WIN MODEL 1903 "RAF" MARKED TAKE-DOWN SELF-LOADING SPORTING RIFLE, NO. 99475

20-inch barrel with adjustable rear sight, the plain frame with impressed markings "GS" beneath a crown, "RAF", together with an Enfield inspector's stamp, 13 1/4-inch stock with tubular magazine, 5lb. 7oz., contemporary London nitro proof

Used for aerial gunnery training, a small number of these rifles were purchased by the British Government specifically for assistance in training Royal Flying Corp and then Royal Air Force air crew in gunnery. It appears that two batches of 300 rifles were ordered in 1916 and 1917 respectively. The serial number dates the rifle to 1918 and the receiver is clearly marked on the left side "RAF" and with an impressed broad arrow and military inspector's mark.
