Details of Lot 241
BOSS & CO.
A HIGHLY UNUSUAL 16-BORE SELF-OPENING SIDELOCK EJECTOR GUN, NO. 4788

30-inch barrels with 2 1/2-inch chambers, about 1/4 and 1/2 choke borings, the frame, locks and numbered top lever with fine bouquet and scroll engraving and retaining some renewed hardening colour, the maker's name signed within a scrolling banner, 15-inch well figured stock (possibly a replacement), 6lb., nitro re-proof, brassbound oak and leather case with later maker's label
S2

The maker confirms that the gun was built in 1897 to match a Purdey gun, no. 14344, to maker a third gun to the pair. It is highly unusual to incorporate the Purdey self-opening action and uses a variation of the Boss ejector with limited travel to avoid the ejector giving further assistance in opening the gun. It is possibly unique. No other examples of a Boss on the Purdey action are known.
