The maker kindly confirms that the gun was completed on 29th December 1860 for the Duke of Wellington as an 18-bore breech-loading gun with 28-inch barrels. The original cost was £57, 15s. Lt Gen Arthur Richard Wellesley, 2nd Duke of Wellington was born in 1807 and succeeded his father in 1852. In 1853 he was made a Privy Councillor and a Knight of the Garter in 1858. Known as "the son of Waterloo", he died in 1884.
