JOHN DICKSON & SON A FINE 16-BORE TWO-GROOVE PERCUSSION RIFLE, NO. 1685 29 1/2-inch damascus barrels, the bored flat rib with matted top surface and folding leaf sights to 200, the engraved breeches with platinum plugs and retaining some hardening colour, the bolted bar locks, hammers and tang with foliate scroll engraving and retaining much original hardening colour, the trigger guard with chequered tang engraved with a running stag, the circular patchbox with fine scroll engraving surrounding a highly detailed scene of a Highland stag, again retaining original hardening colour, the highly figured half length stock with cheekpiece and chequered steel butt plate, sling button, the sliver escutcheon engraved "Alex Hintze, 1867", 14 1/4-inch pull, 9lb. 1oz., London black powder proof, contained within its brassbound oak case, the leather lined interior retaining a virtually full complement of accessories including turnscrews, bullet mould and screw cutter (numbered to the rifle), flask, etc, in its leather slip cover together with an envelope containing a test target (dated 1906) and a handwritten copy of the original account for the rifle giving the total cost at 54 pounds 7s 0d and signed "Alex Hintze" S58 The maker confirms that the rifle was completed 18 September 1855.
Alex Hintze (1846-1924) Hintze was a sporting journalist of Finnish descent and was the editor of the first Finnish sports magazine. In 1869 he was one of the founders of the Helsinki Shooters Association and became editor of "Sporten" magazine in 1881.
