STEPHEN GRANT & SONS A PAIR OF 12-BORE SIDELOCK EJECTOR GUNS, NOS. 7014/5 28-inch replacement barrels by the maker with 2 1/2-inch chambers, about 1/4 and 1/2 choke borings, the frames, locks and top levers with fine scroll engraving, fluted fences, 14 1/2-inch figured stocks, 6lb. 14oz and 6lb. 8oz. respectively, nitro proof, re-jointing recommended, in their maker's brassbound oak and leather case with canvas outer cover, the lid with an engraved presentation inscription "From H. J. M., The Empress Eugenie to F. A. Ernest Mallet Vaughan, 1897" S2 The maker confirms that the guns were built in 1897 and the replacement barrels were fitted in 1974 and 1975 respectively.
HJM The Empress Eugenie (1826-1920)
Born to Spanish nobility, Eugenie was the Empress of France from her marriage to Emperor Napoleon III until he was overthrown in 1870. After the fall of the Empire, she ws exiled to England with her husband and son. She held considerable influence and was close to the British and Russian Royal families. After the deaths of both her husband and son, she settled in Farnborough. During the First World War she donated her steam yacht "Thistle" to the Royal Navy and funded the Military Hospital at Farnborough Hill. |
