HOLLAND & HOLLAND A FINE PAIR OF PREATER-ENGRAVED 12-BORE "ROYAL DELUXE" MODEL SELF-OPENING SIDELOCK EJECTOR GUNS, NOS. 40266/7 28-inch chopper-lump barrels with 2 3/4-inch chambers, about 1/4 and 1/2 choke borings, the frames, hand detachable locks and gold numbered top levers profusely engraved with game scenes surrounded by bold foliate scrollwork, the fences carved with leaves, the lock plates engraved with scenes of pheasants in realistic landscapes and each signed with engraver's initials "KP", the action bases with further scenes and again signed by the engraver, retaining much of their original bright finish, gold lined cocking indicators and rolled edge trigger guards, 15-inch highly figured stocks including leather covered recoil pads, 7lb., nitro proof, in their maker's lightweight leather case S2 The maker confirms that the guns were completed in 1975, the original order being dated 27 February 1973. The ledger page records much detail about the order and notes that the stocks of the guns "..are to match colour and figure of a Monk gun, to be round of horn with slender hand and grip".
Ken Preater has worked almost exclusively for Holland & Holland since apprenticing as an engraver in the 1950s. Specialising in game scenes and bold scrollwork, he soon became Holland & Holland's chief engraver and was responsible for much of the work on the Products of Excellence Series and many of the unique commissions that Holland & Holland undertook in the 1970s and 1980s. |
