30-inch damascus barrels with 2 1/2-inch chambers, about true cylinder and improved cylinder borings, the rib signed and engraved "Patent Breech Loader", the rounded frame, non-rebounding backlocks, noseless hammers and rotary underlever with foliate scroll engraving, the maker's name signed within a scrolling banner, patent slide-and-drop action, conical base fire strikers, the right hammer with repaired spur, left hammer a replacement, 14-inch stock with engraved steel butt plate, 6lb. 12oz., black powder proof

The maker confirms that the gun was built in 1857. It is generally accepted that the Lancaster base-fire was the first commercially successful breech-loading centrefire gun.
