JOSEPH MANTON A 20-BORE PERCUSSION GUN, NO. 5896, CONVERTED BY TANNER, BUILT FOR ADOLPHUS, DUKE OF CAMBRIDGE 30-inch damascus twist barrels, signed on the rib "Joseph Manton's New Improvements by His Majesty's Patent", the gold lined breeches with gold tablets signed "Tanner Herzberg", the hammers and locks with scroll engraving and gold inlaid detail to the heads of the hammers, engraved steel furniture with pineapple finials, the silver escutcheon engraved with his crest, a crowned lion, 14 1/4-inch pull, 5lb. 12oz., in its fitted mahogany case with Joseph Manton label S58 The Prince Adolphus, 1st Duke of Cambridge, KG, GCB, GCMG, GCH, PC (24th February 1774 to 8th July 1850)
Prince Adolphus was the tenth child and seventh son of King George III. He held the title of Duke of Cambridge from 1801 until his death and was Viceroy of Hanover on behalf of his brothers King George IV and King William IV. He was the grandfather of Mary of Teck, Queen Consort of King George V and great great grandfather of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
