THOMAS HORSLEY A RARE 12-BORE BAR-IN-WOOD PATENT HAMMER GUN, NO. 1602 30-inch steel barrels with 2 1/2-inch chambers about true cylinder borings, the frame, sliding top lever, non-rebounding hammers and locks with fine border and scroll engraving, retaining traces of hardening colour, hammers with self-retracting strikers, 14 1/2-inch well figured stock with engraved steel butt plate, 7lb. 2oz., black powder proof, bores pitted
The gun was built in 1867 for Captain Mickery, Royal Engineers. The gun is extremely unusual in that both the action and the barrels are stamped "STEEL". This is a very early use of steel barrels in a sporting shotgun, the barrels appearing to have different hardness of steel used at the breech ends and for the rest of the barrels.
Provenance: The Yannaghas Collection
The gun incorporates two of Horsley's best known patents, namely the "top lever no. 2410" and "the retracting strikers no. 1138" |
