J. MACNAUGHTON A SCARCE .577/.450 DUVAL-MACNAUGHTON PATENT FALLING BLOCK SPORTING RIFLE, NO. 282 26 1/2-inch barrel with broad file-cut rib, the rear sight with folding leaves to 300, Metford style rifling, the frame with falling block and cocking lever, the left side impressed "Duval-MacNaughton Patent No. 23", 14 1/4-inch well-figured stock with cheekpiece and engraved heel and toe plates, 7lb. 14oz., black powder proof S58 The mechanism was patented in 1872, no. 1137. MacNaughton claimed numerous advantages for the Duval-MacNaughton rifle over the popular Martini Henry action that had been selected as the rifle of the British Army. It appears that relatively few rifles on this action were completed and was rapidly superseded by other falling block designs.
