PURDEY & SONS A FINE .450/.400 SELF-OPENING SIDELOCK EJECTOR RIFLE, NO. 15217 28-inch Whitworth steel chopper-lump barrels with file-cut top surface, bead fore sight and folding leaf sight to 200, mid extension, the frame, locks and top lever with fine bouquet and scroll engraving and retaining virtually all of its original hardening colour, fences with side clips, bolted safety catch, 14 3/4-inch highly figured stock with pistol grip, cheekpiece and chequered steel butt plate with charge information "3 1/2 drams No.6 powder", sling swivels, 7lb. 12oz., black powder proof, in its later leather case with reproduction label S58 The maker confirms that the rifle was delivered in September 1896 for W. M. Clarke and was built to match an earlier rifle, no. 14623. The records further note that the rifle was "out in black in 1895" indicating that it was used during that season, prior to final engraving and finishing the following year. |
