26 1/2-inch damascus barrels with full length rib and folding leaf sights, full length ram rod, engraved breeches with platinum plugs, the frame with sliding top catch, the non-rebounding back locks and bolted hammers with fine scroll engraving, the maker's name signed within a scrolling banner, 14 1/2-inch stock with chequered butt plate, 9lb. 6oz., London black powder proof, ribs loose, some refinishing overall, stock with repair above left lock

The maker confirms that the rifle was built in 1857 for Major Grote. Four barrelled guns and rifles became a Lancaster speciality. On this example the barrels rotate on a central spigot allowing each pair to be fired in turn.

25 3/4-inch damascus barrels with slightly raised fore sight, rear sight with folding leaves, the broad rib with doll's head extension, the frame, rebounding back locks, hammers and rotary underlever with border engraving and numbered 1 on the top strap, 14-inch replacement stock with pistol grip, 8lb. 12oz., black powder proof, together with a set of reloading dies and some new brass cases

Holland & Holland confirm that the rifle was delivered as one of what appears to be a pair of rifles on 8 August 1883.

Umberto I, King of Italy

Born in 1844, he was king of Italy from 9 January 1878 until his death by assassination on 19 July 1900. He was deeply loathed in far Left circles, especially amongst anarchists, because of his Conservatism and support of the Barva-Beccaris massacre in Milan in 1898. He was buried in the Pantheon in Rome, the last Savoy to be buried there.

The maker confirms that the rifle was built in 1903 as a .400/.360 rifle.

Scholz, the left lock carved with buffalo, the right lock with leaping leopard and antelope, the action base with lion and the trigger guard with a rhino, bolstered fences, the top lever in the form of an elephant's head, gold cocking studs, 14 3/4-inch exceptionally figured exhibition grade stock with pistol grip and leather covered recoil pad, beaver tail fore-end, 9lb. 9oz., German nitro proof, in its maker's oak and leather case with outer cover, original certificates, instructions, etc

The maker confirms that the rifle was built in 2002 for exhibition at the 2003 Shot Show. The rifle appears very little used.

The rifle was built for King Leopold III of Belgium. It was sold at Christie's, 23rd March 1981.
