James Purdey & Sons are unable to confirm how many light guns they built as shooting aids. However it is likely to have been very few. The first is known to have been built in 1929 for King George V during his convalescence from serious illness. Emitting a beam of light at the pull of the trigger the King could practice his aim and exercise his arm without having to go outdoors. The patent was further developed by Tom Purdey who took out a provisional patent in 1933. The example here has a very low number stamped on both the barrels and inside the fore-end and is also marked "Patent Applied For".

Rt Hon Richard Haldane

Born in Edinburgh in 1856 he was a well known and prominent Scottish politician, noted for forming the Territorial Army in 1907. A Liberal, he was elected to Parliament in 1885 as the Member for East Lothian. In 1895 he helped found the London School of Economics, and joined the Government in 1905 as Secretary of State for War. In 1911 he was granted the title Viscount Haldane and he was appointed Lord Chancellor the following year. He left Asquith's Coalition government in 1915. He was also a member of the Fabian Society and campaigned for the Labour Party in the 1923 General Election. In 1924 Haldane became Lord Chancellor in the Labour governement formed by Ramsay MacDonald and was also leader of the House of Lords. He was elected Chancellor of the University of St Andrews shortly before his sudden death at his home in Auchterarder on 19th August 1928.
